Jackson Hole Symposium 2008

Non-Broadcast Media & Technology Conference

September 23rd through the 25th

For years, filmmakers associated with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival have sought to build collaborative partnerships with non-broadcast distributors. Meeting that demand, this autumn the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science are delighted to announce the first-ever conference that brings content creators together with media execs from museums, parks, aquariums, zoos and other public institutions.

New technology has rapidly expanded the potential for institutional media. As digital media becomes more accessible, even the smallest of these institutions can identify relevant applications—and can afford to put them in place.

The media appetite of this important distribution pathway is as varied as it is broad. From high end, large format and 3-D programming, to gallery installations and interactive kiosks, to handheld videopodcast and web-distributed media, the Jackson Hole Symposium, slated for September 23rd to 25th, will explore the latest technology and visionary media applications as well as promote innovative opportunities for educational outreach in exhibits and on the web.

Registration opens in June, so Save the Dates, now! For more information regarding sponsorship opportunities, please contact Corinne Mathieu . If you are interested in participating in the Programming Committee please contact Lisa Samford .

English Language Learning and Digital Photography

April, 2008

Thanks to funding support from 1% for the Tetons and the Equipoise Fund the Wildlife Film Festival is partnering with the Latino Resource Center to develop a day-long nature photography expedition for first generation latina immigrants, slated for April 5, 2008. This photo expedition will be an extension of the Nature of Learning program developed for local second graders. JHWFF and its organizational partners recognize the power of creating a shared sense of discovery across generations while providing clear educational and cultural benefits. Tailoring the activities for recent female immigrants unaccustomed to nature outings will foster a deeper connection with their new home as they learn about local flora and fauna, expand English language skills and learn basic digital photography techniques. The marriage of art, nature and science enhances the value of this fun day-long expedition. For more details, call the Festival office at 307.733.7016.

Digital Photography & Birding

Spring, 2008

Combining art with science, the Festival is teaming up with the Teton County Rec Center and the Latino Resource Center to create a six-week Digital Photography & Birding Afterschool Club to augment existing Kids Club programming. Every Tuesday from April 29th to June 3rd, students will join professional photographers and biologists for two-hour excursions throughout the Valley. Using digital photography, students will document the changes of spring as they learn about the migratory, mating and nesting habits of indigenous birds. Each student will emerge with a birding journal, portfolio of work on CD, as well as printed photographs from the public exhibit. Please call the Rec Center to sign up, (307) 739-9025.

High School Filmmaking

Spring, 2008

The High School English Language Learners class is making a short film with the Wildlife Film Festival's resident filmmaker, Carrie Noel. They are adapting the Mexican legend, La Llorona into a 10 minute contemporary short film. The students are writing the script, coordinating pre-production, acting, filming and editing the piece. The short explores traditional Mexican culture, immigration and its impact on these student's lives today. This project was funded by a grant from the Wyoming Humanities Council.
