Filmmaker Q&A
1. What inspired this story?
The mission of Wild Kratts is to introduce our young audience to the wonders of the natural world and expose them to all the interesting and varied creatures that exist on our planet. One of those creatures we felt needed more exposure was the Spirit Bear, so we created a storyline that featured this amazing creature.
2. Describe some of the challenges faced while making this film.
Wild Kratts is a unique production in that it is an animated wildlife show, so it is critical that we ensure the scientific accuracy at all times. Whether it’s the movement of the creature featured in the episode – in this case, a black bear – or showing it’s natural behavior, our objective is to present a realistic portrait. Something that is challenging in an animated format.
3. How do you approach storytelling?
Because we have a young audience, the narrative line needs to be simple. After determining the creature and scientific focus of the episode, a storyline is chosen that focuses on the theme. This is our “A” story. Along with this, a “B” story is developed that is interwoven, given it a more multi-layered dimension.
4. What impact do you hope this film will have?
The Kratt Brothers created Wild Kratts with the goal to show kids that animals can take you anywhere in science. Something we feel we are accomplishing by introducing our audience to the wonders of the natural world, one species at a time.
5. What Next?
To continue to encourage our audience to get out there and learn about every species on this planet.
6. What do you feel is most important to remember when telling nature related stories to your audiences?
As mentioned previously, it’s important to keep a simple narrative line, but also not to be afraid to challenge our audience with concepts and vocabulary. Although, we always keep mind our audience’s age.
