Judging 2012

Judging Procedures

Throughout July, committees of preliminary judges ranked media entered into each specific category. Craft categories are judged by peer committees (i.e., writers judge “Best Writing”, editors judge “Best Editing”, etc.). Category finalists, announced July 30th, will be reviewed by our Final Jury of experts (TBD) immediately prior to the Symposium with winners announced at the Awards Ceremony and Gala Celebration. All media entered into the competition are eligible for the TBA Best of Festival Award (TBA).

The quality and credibility of our film competition begins with the preliminary judging! With competition categories in Earth & Environmental Sciences (Including Geology, Paleontology, Energy, Oceanography, Weather, and Climate), Life Sciences (Including Biology, Bio-diversity, Ecology, Genetics, and Genetic Engineering), Medical Sciences (Including Clinical Science, Epidemiology, Pharmacology, and Stem Cell Research), Physical Sciences (Including Astronomy, Cosmology, Physics, Chemistry, and Nanotechnology), Technological Sciences (Including Robotics, Computer & IT, Artificial Intelligence, Mechanical and Systems Engineering) and Human & Social Sciences (Including Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Forensic Science, Social Culture and History) as well as program and craft categories, we are looking for preliminary judges with diverse specialities!

The commitment was approximately 20-25 hours over the course of several weeks (mid-June-July). Judges in most categories downloaded, screened and ranked the films, then participated in conference calls with fellow committee members to select the category finalists. Preliminary judges in the Immersive category met in Denver, July 17-19. Preliminary judges were given complimentary passes to Symposium 2012 (and Gala Awards event) or discounted passes to Festival 2013 are recognized in all online and printed Science Media Awards/Symposium materials.
