Battle for the Amazon
BBC Natural History Unit, 30 min.
What has happened to the Amazon Rainforest since it hit the headlines in the 1980ís? Back then we were told that two thirds would be gone by the year 2000, turned to cattle ranches or desert. This special report cuts through the environmental hype to reveal that in 2005 more than 80% of the forest is still untouched, and that the battle for the Amazon is now fiercer than ever. On one side are powerful farming and timber businesses, lined up against them an alliance of Indian tribes and environmentalists ñ and caught in the middle is the Brazilian government, unsure what to do as forest continues to be destroyed, criminal gangs move in and the Amazon descends further into chaos.
