Speaker Biographies:

Matt Aeberhard back to top
Matt is the Director, Producer and Principle Photographer of the “Crimson Wing.” This film was shot in a 13-month period in remote and difficult conditions at Lake Natron in Tanzania.  Matt was mentored by Hugo Van Lawick at the Ndutu Camp in Serengeti and has spent almost his entire professional career shooting large format material in East Africa.  For the past year he has been actively promoting the conservation of the highly threatened Lake Natron ecosystem.

Allison’s first film won the very first Newcomer’s Award at Jackson Hole in 1991. Since then her films have gone on to win six national Emmys, DuPont-Columbia, Genesis, Missoula, Japan WFF, Jackson Hole and many more. She produces, directs, writes and edits, most often with National Geographic and Nature. Argo’s films are dedicated to raising awareness about the environment and the species we share the planet with.

Lou has been working in the television industry for the past five years. Starting off in entertainment and then moving to factual. Lou is currently directing a film about Everest for Pioneer Productions in the UK.Her independent short film “The White Wood,” nominated here at Jackson Hole, also won at Wildscreen 2008. Among other projects, this year she made a charity film raising awareness for deaf blind children Africa.

Kevin is an Emmy award-winning producer, director and cinematographer who formed Pangolin Pictures in 1995. Before that he was a Senior Producer for National Geographic Television where he edited and produced numerous films. At Pangolin Pictures he has developed and produced series and shows in all genres, including numerous episodes of PBS NATURE including "Sled Dogs", "Tall Blondes", and the recently nominated film for Best Animal Behavior at JHWFF "What Males Will Do.”

As Director of Program Development at Discovery Channel, Bailey searches for and develops specials, mini-series, and series for Discovery Channel. He has spent most of his Discovery career in program development for Military Channel, Science Channel and Discovery Home Channel.  There, he conceived and developed hit series such as “Weaponology” and “Top Tens.” In addition, he was a key member of the team that developed “Flip That House”, which went on to become a huge ratings success for TLC.

As VP of Film Distribution and Development, Janine started in the entertainment business with EMI Music in their licensing division. She then joined Simex!Iwerks and headed up the Film Department for several years overseeing acquisitions and distribution worldwide in specialty venues. She now works for nWave specializing in the North American and South American markets for distribution and development of production projects and new business. nWave has been in Production and Distribution in the 3D market for over 20 years and released their first 3D animated feature film "Fly Me To The Moon" as an independent film for box office grosses of over 50 million worldwide. They are currently finishing production on their next 3D animated feature film "Around the World in 50 Years" for distribution with Studio Canal.

Tariq heads the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development. He was Coordinating Lead Author on Nobel Prize-winning Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change while heading the Future Sustainability Program, Stockholm Environment Institute. In Pakistan, he served as founding Executive Director, Sustainable Development Policy Institute. He received a PHD in Economics from Harvard University.

Currently TV Segment Producer at QUEST, Chris began his television career working for The Disney Channel. After Disney, he became one of the founding partners of Standing O' Productions, Inc. where he co-produced the full-length historical sports documentary "Brickpile To Broadway." He then went on to Fox Sports Bay Area, and in 1997, transitioned to producing science & technology content for the USA Network & Sc-Fi Channel series The New Edge and Cool Tech. That experience led to producing stories for two History Channel series, Tactical to Practical, and Man Moment Machine, prior to joining KQED in 2006.

Eric Bendick is founder of FROGPONDIA FILMS based in Bozeman, Montana. Founded in 2006, FROGPONDIA has produced a wide range of non-profit, "new media," and broadcast productions for diverse clients such as the National Geographic Channel, PBS, Harvard University’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, Patagonia, The Cougar Fund, and the Western Transportation Institute.   Eric is a graduate of Brown University and holds an M.F.A. from Montana State University in Science & Natural History Filmmaking. His recent feature film, “Division Street,” is on tour throughout North America in 2009-10.

John is the Senior Executive Producer of the National Geographic Specials. He produced his first film for National Geographic Television in 1989. Since then he has produced 25 more, ranging from historical subjects to films about the natural world. Since 2005 he has overseen production for the National Geographic Specials on PBS as well as co-executive producer for the Nova-National Geographic Specials, a series of co-branded programs that run on the premiere science series on US Television.
 

Deirdre Brennan back to top
Deirdre is an Emmy nominated designer for film, television and theatre. She was the decorator for “Lipstick Jungle”, season 2 (NBC) and was the decorator on the daytime drama, “Guiding Light” for 8 years (2000 – 2008). Deirdre joined Green Media Solutions as a consultant in 2009, a company that provides strategic guidance and sustainable sourcing to the film and television industry enabling them to reduce their environmental impact. Her first project is the HBO series, Boardwalk Empire. Deirdre is currently producing “Atlantic Salmon: Lost at Sea!” a film about the alarming decline of the wild Atlantic salmon.

Caroline is a highly experienced and award-winning producer/ director who worked for twenty one years for the prestigious Survival series. Caroline joined the Save Our Seas Foundation in 2007 to work on marine productions and initiatives around the world.

C. R. has been involved in high definition television production for two decades and has contributed to many milestone productions in the development of the high definition television industry as a technical producer and video engineer. He has worked in all areas of HDTV production. He is also the Technical Director of the Blue Ocean Film Festival and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.

In 2008, Camilleri created Disneynature, the new label for the Walt Disney Studios, dedicated in producing wildlife films for cinemas, worldwide. As General Manager and Executive Vice President, he is currently overseeing the production of several films under this label: “The Crimson Wing – Mystery of the Flamingos”, “Hidden Beauty – A Love Story That Feeds the Eearth”, “African Cats – Kingdom of Courage” and  “Chimpanzee”, and has acquired for the label such films as “Earth” and “Oceans.”

Jason has worked with Animal Planet since January 2004. His role and responsibilities as vice president of production include partnering with the development team to ensure the formation of new show concepts and maintaining and improving the quality and integrity of shows produced. As an executive producer for Animal Planet, Carey led the editorial direction for “Escape to Chimp Eden”, “The Grizzly Man Diaries”, “Jockeys” and Animal Planet’s record-breaking series “Whale Wars.” Prior to his full-time involvement with Animal Planet and his work on long-time series “Animal Cops” and “Animal Precinct”, Carey worked on many freelance projects for the network.

Suzanne Chisholm back to top
Suzanne is the producer and co-director of “Saving Luna”, a multi-award winning documentary about a lone wild orca who tries to befriend people. She managed the film’s successful theatrical run in Canada, including arranging a service deal with a distributor, organizing and directing publicists, and arranging media coverage and appearances. Together with her husband, Michael Parfit, she produced over 20 short documentary pieces for the National Geographic Channel, on subjects as diverse as Atlantic puffins, the Inuit of Nunavut, rising sea levels in the Netherlands, and melting ice in Greenland. They also directed and produced a one-hour documentary about the Australian environment. Their first film was about refugees in Tanzania. “Saving Luna” is their first feature documentary; it has been broadcast on CBC and NHK, it has screened in festivals in over 20 countries, and it has won 24 awards worldwide. The filmmakers are now working on the US release of “Saving Luna.”

In 2003, Chris was appointed the Executive Director of the Save Our Seas Foundation which supports and develops global marine conservation initiatives. His goal is to affect real positive change by supporting cutting edge research alongside programs that develop education, awareness, and conservation of the marine environment across the world.

Darron Collins, Ph.D. back to top
Darron Collins is the Managing Director of the Amur Region at World Wildlife Fund. A cultural anthropologist by training, Dr. Collins works to develop conservation solutions that balance the needs of nature with the needs of local people across the Amur in Mongolia, NE China, and the Russian Far East.

Alexandra Cousteau back to top
A globally recognized advocate on water quality and policy, Alexandra continues the work of her renowned grandfather Jacques-Yves and father Philippe Cousteau. At 33, she has already mastered the remarkable storytelling tradition handed down to her and has the unique ability to draw audiences into the weighty issues of policy, politics and action. Alexandra is dedicated to advocating the importance of conservation and sustainable management of water resources in order to preserve a healthy planet. Her global initiatives seek to inspire and empower individuals to protect not only the ocean and its inhabitants, but also the human communities that rely on freshwater resources.

Luke is a self-taught percussionist from Brighton. His session work as a drummer and rhythm programmer includes Beats International, Bette Midler, Elvis Costello and Bryan Ferry. After working for several years as a street musician and performer, he first created STOMP in 1991. He has directed, with Steve McNicholas, several award-winning commercials and short films. He received an Oscar nomination for the film BROOMS, an Emmy nomination for STOMP OUT LOUD and co-directed the award winning Imax movies, “PULSE” and “Wild Ocean 3D.” More recently he and Steve McNicholas have created the Lost and Found Orchestra: Luke also performs and conducts with the Orchestra.

Maryanne is Executive Vice President, Editorial and Business Development, heading up development of NGT’s factual films and series and coordinating 360 media throughout National Geographic, utilizing Society-wide media, talent and marketing. She is also responsible for creating financing strategies for film projects, taking the lead to find new broadcast partners and funding opportunities.  An Emmy-winning documentary producer, Maryanne was founder and executive producer for Graffiti Works, a film and video production company based in Orlando, FL, and Washington, D.C. and served as Research Director and Senior Producer at local PBS stations and state networks.

Andrea is the Head of Genre Development, Factual at BBC Worldwide and is responsible for developing and securing the acquisition of the BBC Worldwide's factual portfolio. She works to ensure Worldwide's continued global reputation for pushing the boundaries and setting the standard for natural history output, from global co-productions such as; “Planet Earth”, to fully funded commissions and long running stands such as; “Natural World.”  Prior to BBC Worldwide, Andrea spent a number of years at the BBC where she worked with the corporations factual community to shape and deliver its current and future creative development.

Back in 1986, Randall was given the opportunity to view high definition in Toronto for the first time and knew it was the future of images. A few short years later, after working on the high definition production, “Chasing Rainbows” for CBC, he founded HD Vision in New York City and Dallas. The company's mandate was to specialize in the growth of high definition, launching Dark into a position of technological and creative visionary. An undisputed pioneer in the emerging industry, In 2007, Dark opened Randall Dark Productions, headquartered in the popular, Indy-friendly city of Austin, Texas and has recently opened a new company that is headquartered in China.  He is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and is one of a select few members of the Consumer Electronics Associations Academy of Digital Pioneers, a group recognized for their efforts implementing Digital Television in the United States. David Dugan back to top
David Dugan is Chairman of Windfall Films. He enjoys pushing the boundaries of science and natural history documentaries and has won three Emmys for his films. His most recent production is the radical anatomy series, “Inside Nature’s Giants.” He has been a final judge at JHWFF and his film about E.O. Wilson premiered at last year's Festival.

Rick is President and Co-founder of RPG Productions. Founded in 1980, RPG produced original programming in the fields of health education and children's science and since then, the company has evolved into a highly regarded team of experts in post-production for Giant Screen cinema and 3D.  Rick has supervised post for over sixty large format projects, including both 2D and 3D films and recently oversaw the creation of the first 2D-to 3D live-action conversion of an entire IMAX film, “Lions 3D,” and followed up producing the 3D conversion of “Egypt 3D: Secrets of the Mummies.” Recent credits include "Sea Monsters", “Bugs 3D,” "Wild Ocean 3D", "Dinosaurs 3D: Giants of Patagonia", and the feature 3D films, “U2 3D,” and "Fly Me To The Moon. Current projects include “Blue Man Group: BrainStorm”, “Flatland: Search for the 3rd Dimension,” and “The Last ReefHis studio projects include Disney’s Imax versions of "Beauty and The Beast", and "The Lion King,” and the upcoming “The Wildest Dream.”

Suzanne is the Founder and Executive Director of Green Planet Films, a nonprofit distributor of nature and environmental films. Its mission: promoting environmental education through film. Ms. Harle has18 years experience as a media, promotions, and design consultant with skillsets ranging from web analytics and SEO, graphic design and writing, photography and video editing and internet marketing strategies and promotions. In 2008 she received the Gaia Award for the Environment, from the 'Women in Film and Television Showcase' in West Hollywood, CA.

While Carol has spent the last thirty years writing, producing and directing documentaries for television, she is currently writing a feature film as well as an IMAX 3D film for Evergreen Films.  She is the proud recipient of the Writers’ Guild of America Award, the CableACE Award for Best Documentary Series, two Humanitas Awards, nine Cine Golden Eagles, and a Golden Hugo.  Her films have also garnered two Emmy Awards.

Mark is the producer, editor and writer of a series of BBC Natural World films, from “Bears on Top of the World”, “Penguins of Antarctica”, to “Clever Monkeys” and “Bringing Up Baby.” Originally a zoologist and psychologist, Mark started producing his own programs in 2002. “Clever Monkeys” has won a Focal Award, and is nominated for editing, writing and music in the Jackson Hole Wildlife Festival 2009. As Animal Planet’s vice president of development, Charlie signed on for his third tour of duty at Discovery Communications in September 2007, when he was named to his current position. Foley oversees program development and is responsible for the conceptualization and creation of series, stunts, specials and other programming initiative. Foley has developed the hit series “River Monsters” and “Whale Wars”, which are the best-performing series in Animal Planet history. In 2009, “Whale Wars” was recognized with a Primetime Emmy nomination for outstanding cinematography as well as a Television Academy Honor for “television with a conscience.”

John was appointed President and General Manager of Discovery Channel in November 2007. Ford is responsible for the creative and business strategies and management for the Channel, which consistently rates as the top-quality media brand.  Ford had been President and General Manager of Discovery Times Channel and Military Channel since September 2007.  Ford’s career spans more than thirty years in media, including senior executive positions at Discovery Communications, National Geographic Channel (NGC) and public television.  From 2003 to 2007, Ford was Executive Vice President, Programming at National Geographic Channel.

Jen lives in Bozeman, Montana where she is a graduate student of Science and Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University. She has a BS in Biology from the University of New Mexico She wrote, produced and directed “Breaking Boundaries - the Sondra Van Ert story.” The Smithsonian Institution commissioned her to make a video on environmental contaminants and amphibian declines for an exhibit at the National Zoo.  The result was” Frog, Chemical, Water, You” which won a 2009 national student Emmy, best newcomer at the 2009 International Wildlife Film Festival and is a finalist in two categories at the 2009 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.

William R. Grant is director of Science, Nature and History programs at WNET in New York, the largest US public television station.  He joined WNET in 1995 after 12 years at WGBH in Boston, where he was managing editor of Frontline and executive editor of Nova. At WNET Grant has been executive producer of numerous mini-series including “America on Wheels”, “Savage Skies”, “Savage Earth”, “Savage Seas”, “Stephen Hawking’s Universe”, “The American President”, “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow”, “Slavery and the Making of America”, “African American Lives”, “The Ascent of Money” and “Looking for Lincoln.” As executive in charge of production he has overseen Nature, one of public television’s most watched series, and “Secrets of the Dead.” He has been a member of the board of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival since its founding in 1989 and its chairman since 2002. He was among the first to use high resolution and high-definition imaging systems for oceanographic research.  He was a key participant in the formulation of The Jason Project, the development of an eight thousand square foot traveling museum exhibit “Extreme Deep Mission to the Abyss” as well as numerous scientific and television projects and many Imax films. He is currently developing technologies, storylines and programming for 2D/3D HDTV/UHDTV, Full Dome and Immersive venues for presentation in science centers, museums and aquariums venues.

Jan is Director of the United Nations Division on Forests and head of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat, based at UN Headquarters in New York.  The UNFF is a body in the United Nations made up of all 192 countries in the United Nations.  It addresses all aspects of forests – from complete protection on one end of the spectrum to sustainable use one the other end, and everything in-between, including people, climate change, soils, water and biodiversity, among other issues.  Ms. McAlpine was appointed by the Secretary-General in November 2008 to head the Secretariat.

As Quartermaster and Legal Director, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Kim McCoy, 35, is a passionate animal and environmental advocate with an undergraduate degree in business administration and a J.D. specializing in international environmental law. McCoy is a published law review author, public speaker, and scuba diver with a special fondness for diving with large sharks. Her experiences traveling and living abroad—coupled with a strong desire to put an end to animal cruelty and suffering—led her to choose a vegan lifestyle six years ago. Having previously lived in Japan for two years, she has a fondness for Japanese culture (not including the slaughter of innocent cetaceans) and a special interest in the Japanese public’s general lack of awareness and acceptance of propaganda surrounding the issue of illegal whaling.

Steve is from Yorkshire and worked in the UK theatre as an actor/writer/composer through the seventies and eighties before teaming up with Luke Cresswell and eventually founding the groundbreaking music theatre of STOMP. Now he shares directorial credits with Luke Cresswell on STOMP - based films and commercials and their new show, The Lost and Found Orchestra. With Luke, he composed the soundtrack to the Showtime movie, RIOT, and shares the Oscar and Emmy nominations for his work on BROOMS and STOMP OUT LOUD.  He co directed the award winning IMAX movies, “PULSE” and “Wild Ocean 3D.”

Chris Palmer recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Media at the International Wildlife Film Festival. He has spent over 25 years producing hundreds of hours of award-winning films for television and the global network of IMAX theaters. He directs American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking, which he founded in 2005. Chris is also president of the MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation, which produces and funds IMAX films. His book on wildlife filmmaking, SHOOTING IN THE WILD, will be published by Sierra Club Books this coming April.

Prior to joining KQED in October of 2006, he spent 11 years with The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, where he worked to create innovative educational visitor experiences online and within the museum space. Craig has a B.A. in World Arts and Cultures from UCLA, and an M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University.

Dr. Sanjayan is the Lead Scientist for The Nature Conservancy.  His work, which has been covered by all major networks, focuses on the stories of interdependence between humans and nature.  He frequently appears on documentaries with the BBC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic.  He is a repeat guest on the Today Show and most recently made an appearance on Letterman.  Sanjayan, has a faculty appointment at the University of Montana, in Missoula, which is where he tries to live.

Louie is an award-winning cinematographer, director, and producer whose notable career spans more than three decades providing breathtaking imagery for feature films, television shows, documentaries and commercials. He is an innovator in the world of time-lapse, nature, aerial and “slice-of-life” photography - the only cinematographer in the world who has literally been shooting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week continuously for more than 30 years. Louie is credited with pioneering the contemporary stock footage industry by founding Energy Film Library, which was acquired by Getty Images in 1997.  Motion picture clients include “Sex in the City”, “The Bourne Ultimatum”, “Die Hard 4”, “Syriana”, “Crash”, “Men in Black” and classics such as “American Beauty”, “Koyaanisqatsi” and “E.T.” among others.  Louie went on to found BlackLight Films, a creative production company specializing in producing original theatrical feature, large format films, HD and TV programming.

As Director of Marketing for Sony’s Content Creation Division and having been with Sony for over 14 years, Robert is very intimate with Sony’s high definition acquisition and production business. Robert has been heavily involved in the successful introduction of formats such as DVCAM, MPEG IMX, HDCAM and HDCAM SR to the US marketplace.

Ellen is the founder and owner of Off the Fence. After graduating from Brown University in the U.S., Ellen worked in sales and co-productions for leading international companies such as Fremantle and Atlantis before starting OTF in Amsterdam in 1994.  She is on the board of the Wildscreen Trust, the Jackson Hole Film Festival and the Wild Talk festival in South Africa, and on the Steering Committee of the World Science Congress.

Winslow has been a producer, director and writer for more than three decades. Currently the executive producer, her most recent Discovery Channel productions include “Nature’s Most Amazing Events”, “South Pacific” and “Life” all co-produced with the BBC. Previously she helmed Discovery’s UK Reversioning Project, which re-packaged Discovery US Networks’ programs for Discovery Networks Europe. She has also been an Executive Producer for TLC and Senior Writer for National Geographic Explorer.

Richard started in television industry in 1987, qualified as Veterinary Surgeon in 1991 and has had a long standing interest in web and interactive media particularly in the environmental and wildlife genera. He co-founded a leading production company in SA in 1995 and also joined free-to-air television channel in 1999 as station manager. He then joined Africam - one of the first live wildlife portals on the web - piloted live wildlife television broadcast to BBC UK Horizons during this period and in 2006 started Earth-Touch.
