Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival Announces Awards
Jackson Hole, WY, October 2, 2003 The Jackson
Hole Wildlife Film Festival is pleased to announce the selection
of this years Film Competition Award winners. Films
were selected from over 550 entries by a committee including
David Dugan, Eugene Linden, Mary Jane McKinven, Cathe Neukum,

In addition to these prestigious film awards, the Festival
honored Dr. George Schaller with its Lifetime Achievement
Award. Dr. Schaller is recognized as the worlds foremost
field biologist. As vice president for science and exploration
of the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society, his
five decades of field research have shaped wildlife protection
around the world. His dedication to wildlife conservation
has been instrumental in the establishment of five of the
worlds wildlife reserves, including the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, and Chang Tang Wildlife Reserve
in Tibet.
The Festival also presented a Lifetime Corporate Achievement
Award to the Japanese broadcaster NHK in recognition of its
50th anniversary of TV broadcasting. NHK is a well-known pioneer
in the research and development of HDTV technology, and has
actively promoted HDTV acquisition, editing and broadcasting.
NHK has not only been a leader in the development of the technology,
but is one of the worlds major producers of natural
history films.
For the first time ever, the Festival presented special Conservation
Action Awards in recognition of the important work that is
underway in the Congo Basin. President El Hadj Omar Bongo
(Gabon) was honored for his landmark and precedent-setting
decision to protect over 10,000 square miles of landscape
in a system of 13 national parks. In addition, the Republic
of Congo and the recently formed Congo Basin Forest Partnership
(CBFP) were recognized for their leadership in the conservation
efforts of the region.
The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival is sponsored by 22
