JACKSON HOLE WILDLIFE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES
2005 COMPETITION FINAL JURY


May 30, 2005, JACKSON, Wyo. The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival is pleased to announce its selection of the final jury that will determine the winners of the Film Competition associated with the 2005 Festival, slated for September 19-24 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

JHWFF plays host to an unparalleled competition, celebrating the finest examples of the art of natural history filmmaking. To win an award in Jackson is prestigious. Hundreds of filmmakers and broadcasters from around the world compete in 17 categories, in addition to the Grand Teton Award (Best of Festival). Finalists are announced late July, and winners are announced and honored at the Awards Ceremony and Gala Celebration during the Festival on Thursday, September 22.

This year’s final jury—Alison Argo, Richard Bangs, Thom Beers, Tom Perlmutter and Alan Root—will select the winners from 48 finalists in 16 categories. The final judges for the “Best Achievement in Sound” category are Emmy Award-winning mixers Michael Olman, Jerry Clemens and Dave Concors.
Allison Argo: As a Producer, Director and Writer, Allison Argo has won numerous awards including Emmy, duPont-Columbia, Genesis, Chris, Cindy Gold, CINE Golden Eagle, Jackson Hole, Missoula and Japan International Wildlife Film Festival awards. Her films have received ten national Emmy nominations and won five. Argo’s innovative documentaries include: The Urban Gorilla, Keepers of the Wild, The Last Frog, Stolen Treasures, Uninvited Guest, The Secret Life of Cats, Extraordinary Dogs, Wisdom of the Wild and The Urban Elephant. Most recently Argo completed a short film, Return to Freedom, about a wild horse sanctuary in Central California. She is currently producing a one-hour film for PBS’ NATURE series about Chimpanzees and their complex history with humans.

Richard Bangs: Richard Bangs has written 13 books, including the award-winning The Lost River: A Memoir of Life, Death, and Transformation on Wild Water and more than 500 magazine articles. He is an original adventure-travel trendsetter and founding partner of America's oldest and largest adventure-travel company, Mountain Travel Sobek. Bangs was also a founding member of Microsoft's pioneering Internet channel, Mungo Park, and part of the founding executive team of Expedia.com. He served as president of Outward Bound and is currently editor and producer of well-traveled.com.

Thom Beers: CEO and Executive Producer of Original Productions, a premiere reality-based production company known for cutting edge and provocative programming, Thom Beers is perhaps best known today for his hit series Monster Garage, Biker Build-Off and Monster House on Discovery and recognized in the industry as a storyteller and an innovator. Premiering this spring are new series including Deadliest Catch for Discovery, the explosive BOOM! for Spike, Pulpit Masters and Ballroom Bootcamp for The Learning Channe, and others. Beers founded Original Productions just six years ago, after years as an executive and producer for Turner Broadcasting and Paramount syndicated television. Beers’ productions have have won a number of Emmy's, Ace's, New York Film Festival Awards, Cine Golden Eagles, Houston Worldfest Film Festival and National Education Awards. He is a member of NATAS and IDA.

Tom Perlmutter: As Director General of the National Film Board of Canada's English Program., Perlmutter oversees development and production of the NFB's English-language film, videos, and multimedia productions. A veteran of the Canadian film and television production industry, he is a prolific and successful champion of documentary production, an advocate for responsible children's programming, and an instigator of new initiatives in multimedia programming. Prior to joining the NFB, Perlmutter co-founded Primitive Entertainment, a company dedicated to producing top quality programming for domestic and international markets across all platforms. He created and produced such acclaimed productions as: The Team, Dangerous Obsessions, Great Summits of History, The Bible Unearthed, Teen Invasion, and The Trouble With Boys. Perlmutter was Head of Development at CineNova Productions and Head of Documentaries for Barna-Alper Productions.

Alan Root: Root has been making wildlife movies since he was a teenager, winning scores of prestigious awards over a career spanning almost five decades, including Lifetime Achievement Awards from JHWFF, Wildscreen, Filmmakers for Conservation and NY Environmental Film Festival. He created Kenya’s foremost safari operation, Root & Leakey Safaris, and Wildlife Services Ltd., the first private organization to undertake wildlife research and the sustainable management and utilization of wildlife populations. Piloting helicopters, hot air balloons and airplanes for use in his filmmaking and wildlife research and conservation work, Root has been mauled by a leopard, bitten in the hand by a deadly puff adder snake, and bitten through the leg by a hippo and in the thigh by a male silverback gorilla. Root sits on the boards of several Africa-based conservation organizations and is currently in production on a feature film about the Grzimeks and their fight to save the Serengeti.

Michael Olman, C.A.S.: A re-recording mixer for television and film since 1995, Olman’s varied and extensive credit list includes 24, Desperate Housewives, Hawaii, The Shield, Gilmore Girls, Threat Matrix, Profiler, Weapons of Mass Distraction, Son of the Beach, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, The Pentagon Papers, Steven Spielberg’s The Unfinished Journey and Dinosaur Planet. Michael has been nominated for three Prime-Time Emmy awards, three M.P.S.E. Golden Reel awards, two Cinema Audio Society (C.A.S.) awards, and one MIX Magazine TEC (Technical Excellence & Creativity) award. In addition, he received the C.A.S. Award for Discovery Channel’s When Dinosaurs Roamed America. An active professional in the sound community, Michael is currently serving a third term on the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Sound Peer Group Executive Committee and is also a member of the Cinema Audio Society’s Board of Directors.

Jerry Clemans: Jerald Clemans worked as a lighting technician and in sound before joining CBS Sports road crew. He was one of two technical directors for the 1972 Olympics. He worked for various sound companies in the 1970s before starting Sunwest Recording Studios, a post-production sound house in Hollywood. In 1979 Clemans moved to Compact Video, designing and building their sound department, and later built Modern Sound where he worked as a re-recording engineer for episodic shows such as McGyver and Star Trek: The Next Generation. He now works for Echo Sound Services. Clemans has been nominated for Emmy Awards 29 times and won for the musical specials 30 Years of Sinatra and George Burns and John Denver: Together. He has received Golden Reel Awards and a Cable Ace Award for a Rick Springfield musical special. Jerry is currently serving his 2nd term on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Dave Concors: Dave Concors’ album credits extend back over 20 years, including engineering albums for Billy Idol, Donna Summer and numerous motion picture soundtracks. Concors has been nominated for 6 Emmy Awards and 2 C.A.S awards. He has won 3 Emmys for mixing ER. He currently mixes ER and Third Watch.
