2003 Winners

Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Nature / WNET
Dr. George Schaller was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gala Awards Ceremony Thursday, September 25.

As vice president for science and exploration of the Wildlife Conservation Society, his four decades of field research has shaped wildlife protection around the world. Focusing on a particular species’ role within its environment, encompassing indigenous people, vegetation and other animals, Schaller created the paradigm of conservation biology. Apart from his landmark studies of mountain gorillas (initiating Dian Fossey’s crusade), tigers, lions, jaguars, cheetahs and leopards, he has also researched wild sheep and goats, snow leopards, giant pandas, rhinos and flamingos.

Conservation Action Awards
For the first time ever, the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival presented Conservation Action Awards at the 2003 Wildlife Festival.

The Congo Basin Forest Partnership received a Conservation Action Award for their efforts to conserve and sustainably manage the biodiversity rich forests of Central Africa. President El Hadj Omar Bongo received a Conservation Action Award for his precedent-setting decision to set aside over 10,000 square miles to create a system of 13 National Parks in Gabon.

Corporate Achievement Award sponsored by NHNZ, Ltd.
The Festival also gave its first Corporate Achievement Award to the Japanese broadcaster NHK, in recognition of its 50th anniversary of TV broadcasting.

After 26 years of radio broadcasting, NHK started its first TV broadcasting in 1953. With a firm belief that broadcasting is an expression of culture founded on technology, it has strived to take in the newest technological developments into broadcasting. NHK is a well-known pioneer in the research and development of HDTV technology, and has actively promoted HDTV acquisition, editing and broadcasting. NHK has not only been a leader in the development of the technology, but is one of the world’s major producers of natural history films.

2001 Winners

Lifetime Achievement Award
For his astonishing work as a pioneer in underwater photography and diving, Prof. Hans Hass received the Dieter Plagge "Lifetime Achievement" Award. In 1942, Hass was the first person to combine the use of swim fins (invented in 1937) with self-contained diving equipment in a water environment, initiating the change from helmeted "walk-diving" to the new era of swim diving. From 1937 to 1962 he made over 100 underwater films, most of them with his wife and partner, Lotte Hass. Today, at 82 years of age, he is still a fervent advocate of marine and environmental protection. Six decades of significant achievements and advances have made him a pioneer for both scuba divers and marine environmentalists. His many books and films have influenced most of the underwater filmmakers and photographers of today. For more information about Hans Hass, refer to the Historical Diving Website at www.hds.org/hass.html
