Patricio Robles Gil, Photographer

Transforming nature’s majestic beauty into photographic poetry, Patricio Robles Gil makes the goals of conservation clear: These last wild places are what we are working to save, and it’s important to protect them. For more than 20 years Gil has captured images of Earth’s most unique and imperiled landscapes, earning him widespread recognition as one of the best nature photographers today. But Robles Gil went beyond simply showing what’s at stake – he took action.

In the 1990s he founded two leading environmental organizations in his native Mexico and introduced its largest cement company, CEMEX, to CI. The resulting 10 year partnership generated our seminal series of books, Megadiversity Hotspots, Wilderness Hotspots Revisited, Wildlife Spectacles, and Transboundary Conservation, all lavishly illustrated with Robles Gil’s extraordinary images. Winning this year’s Outstanding Nature Photographer Award from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Robles Gil’s most recent book, The Call of the Mountains, portrays his 40-year love affair with Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert.
