Allen retired at the start of 2005 after ten years as editor-in-chief of the National Geographic magazine,
responsible for many of the changes that have marked the evolution of the
magazine into an important contemporary journal, dealing with important issues
of the environment, world politics and the tenuous issues of the day. Bringing
the now-editor of the Geographic, Chris Johns, to his deputy's position, Allen
